Regrettably, there isn't going to be a single solution to the issue of how to substitute lithium-ion batteries. Accordingly, people have been dreaming up all sorts of differences in the format to resolve the world's energy storage requirements.
Here are 3 potential alternatives to lithium-ion
1. Sodium-ion
Sodium-ion batteries are an appearing technology with favorable cost, safety, sustainability, and performance advantages over commercialized lithium-ion batteries. Key advantages include using widely available and affordable raw materials and a swiftly scaleable technology based on present lithium-ion production methods. These properties make sodium-ion batteries important in satisfying global demand for carbon-neutral energy-storage solutions.
2. Solid-state batteries
Developing solid-state batteries that can be produced at a large scale is also one of the most significant challenges in the industry today. The goal is to develop solid-state batteries appropriate for electric vehicles, surpassing lithium-ion batteries' performance, safety, and processing limitations.
Contrary to research into lithium-ion batteries, which will offer incremental gains in performance about theoretical limits, research into solid-state batteries is long-standing and high-risk but also can bring high rewards.
3. Lithium-sulphur
Lithium-sulphur technology can offer cheaper, lighter batteries that also offer safety advantages. After first finding use in niche markets like satellites, drones, and military conveyance, the technology can transform aviation in the long term. Electric aircraft providing short-range flights or vertical take-off and landing (including personalized aviation and flying taxis in cities) are different possibilities by 2050.
